Nicholas McDonald 1st place | Whitehaven High School
This piece of art was inspired by the various student protests carried out by the victims of the many school shootings that took place in 2018. The message is intended to capture how I and many other high school students felt. We desired a change so we can all feel safe in an environment where we are supposed to thrive.
Rodney McAfee 2nd place | Middle College High School
This piece was inspired by my city, the city of Memphis. All around Memphis is violence left and right. I wanted to deliver a positive message through my art, that can hopefully touch at least one person. If I touch at least one person that’s one step closer to stopping the violence.
Myles Jones 3rd place | Whitehaven High
Kyteyana Cox Honorable Mention | Middle College High School
Lori Davis 1st place | Geeter Middle School
The reason I drew this piece of art work is because this beautiful black woman sees crime. Bad things are happening everyday, but she mainly focuses on getting her education and learning.

The reason why I choose the theme of domestic violence and children’s parents divorcing at a young age, is because it is a problem that is happening behind closed doors. I have seen it firsthand, when some of my friends shared it with the class in my 5th grade year, and everyone got very emotional. They got a lot of love and support from the class. Children shouldn’t have to experience something like this at a young age, which can lead to scarring emotional and mental problems when they become adults. The parents can pass bad habits down to their children, and so on. The scene I drew is about a poor family that has an abusive father. Year after year they were behind on bills. One night the father decided to injure and degrade the mother. The daughters took a brave step and decided that enough was enough. They called the police and eventually he was arrested. I included the police, because in my opinion, their service is not appreciated enough because of political issues and other controversy in the U.S. Ever since the father’s arrest, the family has been living happier than ever, exploring new opportunities. When there is a problem, it is better to cease it than to set it aside and wait for someone else to solve it.
Ally Wright 3rd place | Snowden School
The inspiration behind my “Silence the Violence” entry was mainly the calming feeling that nature brings. I wanted to bring peace to something that was normally not associated with the idea of peace.
Jayden Harris Honorable Mention | Colonial Middle School
